What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is an exercise program that is not specialized. The CrossFit method is a variety of high intensity functional movements.

Varied- a number of different elements.

Training a variety allows individuals to express their potential through a broad range of movements.  The variation seen in CrossFit is that of several elements along the spectrum of fitness.  The goal of CrossFit is to develop the 10 General Physical Skills , and do so in a safe and effective manner.

Functional- relating to the way in which something works or operates.

Human beings are built with upon a system of levers that allow us to have mechanical advantage over objects around us.  CrossFit spotlights movements and movement patterns that allow athletes to use these levers within the body in the most efficient way possible.  More simply put, CrossFit helps you become more functional in not only day to day activities but also unexpected and unknown tasks.

Intensity- Force X Distance / Time

The characteristics of intensity are often misunderstood.  Intensity is not how much you yell, or sweat, or flex in a mirror.  Intensity is how much weight you move, how far you move that weight, and how fast you can move.  By defining intensity in this manner it is easy to see how you can increase intensity at any level of athleticism.  If you aren't as strong as others you are working out with, lower the weight, keep the same rep scheme, but do the work faster.  While intensity is an important component of CrossFit it is not where everyone should or will begin.  The CrossFit program is built upon a foundation that will allow athletes to see continued progress throughout their fitness journey.

MECHANICS----CONSISTENCY----INTENSITY

Build proper form and technique (mechanics) first.  Practice solid mechanics over and over (consistency) until it becomes almost reflexive.  Then, when the foundation is there, you move properly and can do so repeatedly, go faster and heavier (intensity) each day you walk into the workout!
